Sometimes it takes one brave voice and a decade of patience to see change. Thank you for your work, Agnes Pareyio. To save one life is to save the whole world.
In King County, Washington, a 3 week study using Google searches found that there was a peak in the searches on Backpage and other sex-industry sites at 2pm - as men at work planned after-work dates. With an estimated 27,000 buyers soliciting online sex through 130 different websites in King County (which includes Seattle) every day, its not hard to imagine that some of these searches were done on business computers and cellphones. In response, a public-private partnership between many King County businesses and the anti-trafficking coalition is working to stop the purchase of sex from the workplace. Employers in the alliance have agreed to block websites where sex is advertised, update personnel policies and make it clear to employees that sex buying won’t be tolerated.
